Today I’m going to show you how to create a pretty floral arrangement using an alternative arrangement. Instead of floral foam, I use a simple string that I wrap around a rectangular glass vase. The flower stems are then simply inserted in between the string!
Nowadays I like to use alternatives floral foam to create flower arrangements. Although it is very easy to work with the green floral foam, this type of floral foam for fresh flowers contains microplastics and does not perform when it comes to environmental friendliness and sustainability (see FAQ on floral foam). Sustainable floristry offers great alternatives, such as a floral hedgehog/kenzan, a wire mesh or flower arranger lids. And there are more things to try out, such as a piece of string which we use today.
With the following step-by-step instructions you can easily make a flower table decoration yourself!
Tools
Here you can see the tools I used for the flower arrangement: flower scissors to cut the flowers and household scissors to cut the string.
Materials
I used these materials for the flowers in the glass vase: a rectangular glass vase (filled with water), a string and various flowers and grasses (e.g. germini, carnations and gypsophila).
Instructions | Floral foam alternative: flower arrangement with a string
Step 1: Attach string to glass vase
In the first step I attach the string to the glass vase.
To do this, I cut a long piece of string and wrap it around the glass vase several times.
I tie the ends of the cord with a knot and cut off the excess.
Tip: Wrapping will be easier if the water is poured in afterwards.
Step 2: Cut flowers
Now I cut the flowers.
I use my scissors for this.
You can easily measure the height of the stems by holding them to the glass and then cutting them off.
Step 3: insert flowers
Now the flowers can be inserted!
I put one flower after the other between the string.
And the floral arrangement with the string used as floral foam alternative! I hope you had as much fun with this DIY as I did and that you enjoy looking at the floral decorations!
Have a nice day! 🙂
